Since Tom rarely used the existing kitchen, Swartz designer Susan Chwan had to elicit the couple’s vision for using the space after they were married. Entertaining family, friends and clients was a priority. They also wanted to brighten the space and give it a crisp, clean look. Nancy, who had already helped design a kitchen that she loved, was very specific about the features and functions she wanted.

Nancy and Tom did their homework. Using magazines and visiting kitchen displays, they chose a color scheme and developed design ideas. Although they wanted to maintain costs, they were willing to extend themselves for details like crown- and foot-molding and functional cabinetry.

They wanted to brighten their kitchen and integrate the fireplace in the entranceway. Susan recommended removing the wall between the two rooms and extending the kitchen counter into the adjacent room – creating a functional and esthetically-pleasing contiguous space.

“I thought placing matching pantry cabinetry across from the new kitchen entrance could create an entertainment station and a visually stunning effect,” says Susan. This would also help put the small fireplace into context.

Dramatic changes were unfolding.
